THINGS TO CHECK IF THE BURNERS IGNITE BUT THEY "BOOM" WHEN THEY DO:
- Rust is commonly covering some portions of the burner or has filled the burners with rusty powder inside and is restricting the gas movement in the burners. Remove the burners and brush, vacuum and scrape all the rust you can find and put them back in place carefully to make sure of the alignment. Notice that most of the rust came from the walls inside the combustion chamber. You don't want to clean the burners without knocking off some of the rust from the walls of the chamber.
Most of the newer furnaces don't have burners that entend into the combustion chamber. Rather they blow the flame into the combustion chamber and with the advent of new technologies and exhaust fans, they don't produce rust. So the problem is going to be in the automatic gas valve or in the air mixture. Many times booming is caused by the gas pressure and you will need a good technician.
Corrosion is also very common and is a bit more complicated. The Modine Company has an excellent
four page article (.pdf file requires Adobe Reader) about the products of combustion and some of the by-products of the combustion that will cause corrosion and build-up of matter on and within the heat exchanger of a gas furnace.
- Crossovers between the burners can be poorly aligned and some of the burners ignite late. Be very careful of this situation. Don't stand directly in front of burners when they ignite and shut them down quickly if they don't ignite on schedule.
- Alignment of the orifice to the burners is critical. Sometimes the orifice assembly is pointing upward and hitting the inside of the burners incorrectly and poor or no ignition results. You might try placing a washer strategically under each end of the assembly to correct the problem.
- Poor gas/air mixing will create the "boom".

TIP:
Sometimes it is even necessary to diffuse the gas and air inside the burner. Drill into the top of the burner body on
the top directly between the AIR SHUTTER and the CARRYOVER and screw down into it a #8 by 1/2 inch sheet metal screw.
You can vary the depth of penetration to create better operation. |
