THINGS TO CHECK IF THE PILOT LIGHTS BUT THE BURNERS WILL NOT:
- Pilot warp switches are part of the pilot assembly on some units. They close a set of contacts that after the pilot supplies enough heat on them, the low voltage goes then to the automatic gas valve. If they are not closing, you can remove the assembly and blow the rust out and it probably will work. If not, a replacement part is about 45 to 60 dollars from the dealer. Some models don't have the electrode and are not spark igniting. They are just a regular standing pilot.
- Listen for the "click" of the automatic gas valve. This means the thermostat is energizing it but no gas is escaping into the burners. Make sure you have gas to the automatic gas valve. If it does this and you get not gas to the burners, then you will have to replace the automatic gas valve.
- Limit switches may have tripped because the chamber is too hot and it will keep the gas valve from operating. Some units even have auxiliary limit (thermal links) and they will burn in two or a tripping device may trip. It will not be apparent by visual inspection and will have to be checked by a continuity meter.

One side of this switch has a set of fan motor contacts and the other side has a limit switch and will break the low voltage to the automatic gas valve. If this device only has three wires into it, then you will find a small brass jumper in place near the base of the switch.
- Clean the burners of any rust. Rust will create a multitude of problems. Be sure to remove the burners and pour out the rust from inside them. This is an important thing to do. It can cause erratic ignition and uneven burning of the flame. TURN THE UNIT OFF QUICKLY if you hear the burner gas and it is not igniting or if portions of the burner or burners is not igniting. The same is true if one burner ignites and the others do not.
| Never ignite the burners with your head or even your body directly in front of
the unit. Stand to the side or back away several feet until it ignites properly or you shut it off.
|
- Make sure there is low voltage to the terminals of the automatic gas valve. If there is, and no gas is to the burners, you have a bad gas valve and will have to be replaced or it is stopped up at the inlet at the gas fitting from the debris inside the gas line. Remove the line to it and softly blow out the sediments and try it again.
If this was the problem, replace the incoming line (if it is copper) with one of the new UL approved lines. Natural gas should never be run through copper tubing.
- Condensation in the gas line does occur. It will create some pretty weird effects and you will need to call the service technician.
- Make sure the orifices are clear. Take special precautions not to damage them or enlarge the openings while you are cleaning them.
- Excessive gas pressure will cause a gas valve not to operate. If you suspect this, call the gas supplier.
