The inexpensive filters are extremely common and vary in styles. These kind
are the ones you can almost read a newspaper through them.
- MESHED METAL¹--one or several layers of expanded aluminum, usually with
a metal frame. These are the least quality of all for applications in
home air conditioning. They are reasonably effective in grease-trapping,
however, in kitchen EXHAUST applications.
- HOG HAIR¹--Glued together fibers that resemble
hog hair and has no
backing or frame usually. Sometimes has a rod to help it maintain its
approximate shape and location. Comes in roll form or a cut-a-way flat
piece or can be pre-cut to size. Colors vary and sometimes even has
a cardboard frame of sorts.
- FOAM¹--many types available and some have formed lightweight plastic
inner frames and a border. Others may be replaceable from within an
aluminum frame. The type referenced here is only 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.
- ANGEL HAIR¹
glass fiber--This is the same type of material
found in the $1.59 variety, but can be purchased in a roll of some length
and cut and placed in or on a metal frame as well. Lennox brands have used these pretty
effectively for years on a large hammock-type. In that application, it
works better somewhat because less velocity goes through any one spot and
the total area is about tripled what it would be as a flat sheet.
- OTHERS¹--too numerous and too worthless to mention. You can feel
confident, though, that no footballs or bed sheets will be sucked through
your system with these filters if they are secured well in place in the
air stream. If you want real filtration, let's talk.
¹ Note: I do not sell ANY of these items. Please don't waste a call.
