This series of diagnostic assistance will deal specifically with AIR COOLED REFRIGERANT TYPE SYSTEMS,
NATURAL and LP GAS FIRED FURNACES and ELECTRIC ELEMENT HEATING SYSTEMS, but many of the symptoms and solutions will apply to various
other types. If your unit is a HEAT PUMP, you will notice the proper references to it.
I respond to your e-mail inquiries, but please give me enough information of the symptoms to be able to assist you properly. For heat pumps supply me accurate temperatures of air entering and leaving all pieces of equipment, give me gauge pressures if you can get them, indoor temperature, outside temperature, temperature of the copper tubes at the outside unit, describe what your equipment looks like and its condition and age and what the thermostat looks like and its system options. Tell me if your gas heating unit has printed circuit control of the fan operation and if it is the old style open burners with convection draft or the newer style with a fan motor that forces out or if it pulls out the fumes to the vent pipe. The more elaborate your details, the more likely I am to give you good information in return.
 The utility bill is very high and getting higher.
OUTDOOR UNIT SYMPTOMS FOR HEAT PUMPS:
Steam is present and/or the condenser fan is off.
If the compressor and outdoor fan won't run.
If the compressor will not start but the outdoor fan seems to run okay.
If the outdoor fan won't run but the compressor runs for a while
without it.
If the compressor hums briefly but won't run.
If the compressor cuts off from the internal overloads protector.
Refrigeration problems or ice on the tubing.
The unit will ice badly and not defrost.
GAS HEATING PROBLEMS:
The pilot won't light.
Pilot is on but burners won't light.
The burners are normal, but shuts off and on while fan still runs.
The burners are normal, but fan won't come on.
Burners won't come on, but fan comes on okay.
Fan makes noise but was okay for cooling and constant fan.
Fan continues to run regardless of setting of thermostat.
The burners ignite okay but it "booms" when they do
The whole family has headaches during heating season.
Water forms on windows, etc. in winter time.
Nothing works!
ELECTRIC HEATING PROBLEMS:
Nothing works.
Fan comes on but little or no heat.
Breaker trips a lot.
Heat and fan okay but something clicks a lot.
Bad odor comes from heating system.
GENERAL INDOOR SYMPTOMS:
The indoor fan motor won't start or makes noises or vibrates badly.
Everything runs but little or no air from outlet air grills.
Everything works but the temperature isn't accurate or consistent.
Everything works but cold air blows before warm air starts.
