THERMOSTATS PAGE FOUR:
The electronic type thermostats are the wave of the future. They are so
far superior to all others now and are improving even more on a daily
occurrence. The greatest feature they have is their ability to control the
temperature with almost perfect accuracy. The price is higher than thermostats that claim similar features at other locations, but believe me, you get what you pay for. I have a lot of customers complaining about the problems with other brands and all I can say is "OOPS". Stay with quality, is my opinion.

Honeywell®Non-Programmable Digital thermostat. Our best recommendation here. For both regular air conditioning and the heat pumps. This one has a very good price and near-perfect control of temperature. It has the system and fan controls you are used to having and a large display for easy monitoring of the room temperature and very easy up and down buttons for temperature change. |
Honeywell's latest Programmable Digital thermostat. This is the "mostest and the bestest". |

Honeywell is now marketing a new version of an already good one that has numerous improvements over Chronotherm III or Chronotherm IV. It is
simple to operate and to program and set periods of different control and
all the while is wonderfully accurate. The new Touchscreen VisionPRO model now is capable of programming fan operation for periods when you want the fan to run continuously regardless of the settings for the compressor or heating operations.
|
It can be used very well to save you enough money to make it a profitable
investment. The price is now very reasonable, considering the quality and features of this one. It has a very flexible set of controls with just the touch of a finger, not only on the face of the thermostat, but also installer options abundantly. This is the premier choice of comfort control and is the only choice for my own home.
Notice particularly that as an option you can have the outdoor temperature displayed. It requires the
C7089U outdoor sensor and cable to operate, but it is very reasonably priced and requires only a little additional installation. This is a really nice new convenience.
Features
- Full seven-day program capability; different schedules and temperature
setpoints may be selected for everyday to fit any schedule.
- Touchscreen operation makes programming easier and faster
- Daylight Savings Time (DST) key for quick change in and out of Daylight
Savings Time or can be set to change automatically.
- Easy temporary temperature setpoint changes for current period, vacation
hold (1 to 255 days) or indefinite hold adds to your comfort
and energy savings.
- Attractive styling complements any decor to the homeowner's delight.
- Back lighting the large display makes the Touchscreen very easy to read.
- All models have optional outdoor temperature sensor capability for homeowner
convenience. The sensor is also more accurate than a thermometer.
- Configurable features:
— ºF or ºC temperature display;
— Automatic or manual changeover;
— Electric or conventional heat fan operation
— Adjustable heating cycle rate.
- Minimum
off time for cooling compressors and heat pumps helps protect
and extend the equipment life.
- Adaptive
Intelligent Recovery™ control brings the room temperature
to temperature setpoint at the programmed time, maximizing
comfort and energy savings.
- Setpoints
are permanently held in memory (no batteries necessary except to show a display during power outages) and retained
memory is retained during power outages for increased installer and homeowner
convenience.
- Hardwired and/or battery powered for virtually all equipment and application needs.
- All or part of the controls and/or programming can be locked out for addidtional security
Installation and Owner's Manual pdf files are available from Honeywell's web site.
KNOWING WHAT TO EXPECT
When you convert from an electro-mechanical (mercury bulb or magnet switching) thermostat to one of the new all-electronic ones with the digital displays, you will encounter some new features. Some of which you need to become aware and learn to accept as a standard. They are not faults, just different. Let me point out a few of them:
- Cycles off before the set point is reached.
This is normal on electronic thermostats. Some may be slower than others. For example the Honeywell T8400 or the FocusPRO is slower than the more expensive and extensively featured Chronotherm IV or the new VisionPRO Touchscreen model. Use patience and let these thermostats work the way they are designed and don't watch them and "clock" them and think they have failed you.
- —NO AC
Anytime power is interrupted, a notice like this will appear. Older models derive all their power from the transformer in the air conditioner controls. If you unplug the unit, the display becomes blank on the thermostat. Others have battery backups and the display will remain "on" even if the air conditioner has no power, but some indicator on the display will show that it has no "AC" (meaning primary power).
- A touch for temperature reading starts a time delay.
On most older models, when you touch the temperature change button it will simply display the temperature, but on some models if you hold down the button and change the setting even one degree it will start a time delay. This is a feature that protects the compressor
from "short cycling". The new ones will have a time delay feature similar to this.
- Ramp down and 5 minute delays.
On all the digital models by Honeywell, each time you switch from cool to off and back again the timer protects the compressor and will not let the thermostat try to turn it on immediatley. There will be a five minute delay. This is a really wonderful thing.

Some of the older models still on the shelves or in use are good programmable thermostats. The Honeywell Chronotherm
III® is my best recommendation of the older models, but the new VisionPRO® is the choice if you have to buy a new thermostat. Here is a good look at the old Chronotherm® III:
A model similar to this one can have many other features. It can be
automatic change-over from heat to cool or control multiple stages or heat
pumps. Whatever the need. This is one of my favorites within the older variety.
See the More Details section for information on the old T8400 Series non-programmable thermostat.
